Some of the most awe inspiring and beautifully preserved frescoes in all Florence can be found at the Santa Maria del Carmine church, a short walk of five minutes from the Santo Spiritus main square.
The frescoes that can be seen were the result of a collaboration between two of the greatest artists of the day, Masaccio and Masonlino da Panicale, with finishing touches provided by the skillful hands of Filippino Lippi.
The story told through these works, by way of 12 biblical scenes, starts with Genesis and leads up to the gospel according to St. Peter. The frescoes are unlike any others you will have seen, because they have been so lovingly maintained through the centuries.
Another element of this experience, and one of Florence's unique abilities, is that the city manages to hide away in fairly non descript buildings (the church itself is quite small, sitting in a Piazza that during most of the day serves as a car park) such amazing works of art so effortlessly.
