Major restorations were initiated in 1898 by Count Filippo Sassoli de' Bianchi to restore its 15th-century appearance, despite significant 18th-century refurbishments, including the still-consecrated Chapel dated 1729. Key internal features include the Salone dei Medici with a 14th-century pietra serena fireplace bearing the Medici coat of arms, and the Papal Apartment which once hosted Popes Leo X and Clement VII.
