If you enjoy mountain climbing but want to take it to the next level then why not try an extreme sport called canyoning that available right here in Tuscany! It’s a stimulating activity that involves travelling through canyons and gorges by climbing, abseiling, jumping, walking and even swimming!
The most popular place to engage in this sport is at Garfagnana which is based on the River Serchio between the Apuan Alps and the Apennines. Those wishing to stay here for a few days have a wonderful choice of villa rentals in Bagni di Lucca and Barga, two gorgeous towns in the area.

A specialist canyoning school here offers five available levels ranging from beginner to expert trails. One of the most popular creeks in Tuscany is here, Orrido di Botri. Sections of it are perfect for showing beginners the basics of canyoning and expert climbers have plenty to challenge them as they can attempt an ascent up to a mountain ridge over two thousand metres above the ground!
Beginners only require a decent pair of trekking shoes, a safety helmet and a wetsuit when wading through the cold waters of the gorges. All other equipment is provided by the Canyoning School. These thrilling beginner expeditions usually last around two hours.
Apraia Trench is the most difficult and technical gorge in the Apuan Mountains. Only expert climbers are allowed to attempt this gruelling four hour expedition. It’s full of tricky vertical ascents and very high abseiling sections; this is certainly not an activity for the faint hearted!
