Go On A Tour Around Pisa City Inspired By Galileo Galilei!

Who hasn’t heard of the great Galileo Galilei? He was a mathematician, physicist and philosopher but was probably most famous for his astronomical discoveries. In 1615 he fiercely advocated the Copernican system which correctly stated that that the Earth and other planets orbited the sun, opposing the Catholic belief that the sun and other planets orbited Earth. The leaders of the Church accused him of heresy and ordered him to remain under house arrest for the rest of his days. He died nine years later.

His legacy has lived on and today he is popularly known as ‘The father of modern physics’ and ‘the father of modern astronomy’ His contributions to the fields of science and mathematics have been outstanding and he will be forever cherished as one of the world’s greatest minds.

Galilei Galileo was born in Pisa in 1564 and there are many fascinating landmarks here erected in his honour. If you're holidaying in Pisa during your next vacation to Tuscany then you should certainly take a few hours to walk in the footsteps of this great man!

Start your tour by heading to the most famous area in Pisa city, Piazza dei Miracoli where the leaning tower of Pisa stands beside the majestic cathedral and baptistery. Galileo was christened here and also where he was consecrated as a scientist. Walk to the other side of the square where you can view his birth certificate in Opera della Primaziale Pisana.

The young Galileo suffered a lot with illness as a young child but despite all this his parents has strong beliefs that their son would grow up to do great things…a very accurate prediction!

Visit the nearby Piazza dei Cavaliren where Galileo worked as a professor in the University of Pisa. His inspiring studies and flair for a new wave of scientific and mathematical thinking caught the attention of the powerful banking group, the Medici family, who proudly sponsored his work and secured his job here.

Head further into the heart of Pisa city to the fashion high street in the Borgo Stretto area. On the corner of this street and Via Mercanti, there is a plaque erected to mark the area where Galielo lived. In later years he moved to a residence in Piazza delle Vettovaglie.

After a delicious lunch in one of Pisa city’s many exquisite eateries, why not finish your historical tour with a visit to the national museum of the Palazzo Reale where there is a wonderful display of Galileo’s greatest discoveries in the fields of mathematics, physics and astronomy.

This museum is richly decorated in 17th century furnishings, paintings, tapestries and sculptures and is certainly worth a look around. Head upstairs to the ‘Torre della Verga d’Oro’ on top of the building where you can admire a breathtaking view of Pisa city!
