If you like what you see when you explore Tuscany’s magnificent cities and tourists attractions then why not see all the delights just waiting for you in underground Tuscany? There are 1,597 caves in this region and many of them are available for touring around.

Enjoy trips to cave systems in Monte Corchia in Lucca province, Massa Marittima and Cetona. Visitors will have no trouble finding a great selection of lovely holiday rentals in Cetona town for example.

Start a day of adventure with a visit to the Monte Corchia cave system in the Apuan Alps which includes over sixty kilometres of galleries, tunnels and caves that run 1200 metres into the earth!

Tourists will learn all about the five million year old history of this beautiful place as well as enjoying a tour around part of the system. Admire natural rock formations like stalagmites, stalactites and the beautifully formed clusters of cave pearls which all form in limestone caves over thousands of years.

The tour leaves the nearby village of Levigliani di Stazzema and leaves tourists at the Antro del Corchia where it will begin under the leadership of an expert tour guide.

See the underground lake here called ‘Laghetto del Venerdi’ and a gallery of fossil stone formations that is aptly named ‘Foresta Pietrificata’ meaning ‘The Petrified Forest’. Also worth exploring is the curious underground tunnel system that exists under the town of Massa Marittima in Grosetto province. The passageway that runs under here can be walked along under the guidance of a tour expert.

It is nearly three hundred metres long and helmets and flashlights are provided by the tour operator. This is guaranteed to be a thrilling underground adventure!

The Belvedere Natural and Archaeological Park near the town of Cetona in Siena province would be a perfect destination for a day of history and entertainment on your Tuscan holiday.

There is an extensive network of tunnels and caves here that are lit up for touring. There’s a cave named after Saint Francis after it was believed that he spent a lot of time in solitude here.

Other interesting information and artefacts relating to this place are on display in the local Mount Cetona Prehistoric Civic museum.


It has a huge archive of information about the cave systems and evidence of human settlements in the area dating from the Palaeolithic Age to the Bronze Age. It’s open from July until September from 9am-1pm and 4pm -7pm. It’s closed on Mondays and can be toured from October to June by appointment only. Entry is only €2.50.
