baptistry in pisa
The bell tower, which later became known as the “Leaning Tower of Pisa’, began construction in 1173. But five years into construction, builders noticed that it was beginning to lean due to poorly laid foundations and weak subterranean soil. It was left alone for a century before construction was reconvened to balance out the lean. The newly added floors of the tower had an added level on the opposite to regain a more level standing ground and to help evenly distribute the weight balance.

Walk around the splendid medieval cathedral in Piazza del Duomo and admire the intricate architectural skill involved in crafting such a masterpiece. Beside the cathedral is the baptistery, a cylindrical building with a marvellous dome peaked roof.

Dating back to the 12th century, this is the largest baptistery in all of Italy!

The infamous mathematician and astronomer, Galileo Galilei was baptised here in Pisa in the beautifully constructed Baptistery and had close roots to his beloved city as he rose to fame in adult life.

The monumental walled cemetery is located at the North of the square and is regarded as one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world.

Known as ‘Campo Santo’ meaning ‘Holy field’ the cemetery is encased by a magnificent building which was built one hundred years later in the 13th century. Within the building is a collection of over eighty fascinating sculptures and tombs that can be seen by tourists.

Be sure to gaze upon one of the most enticing frescoes here titled ‘The Triumph of Death’ by Buonamico Buffalmacco. Pisa’s Piazza dei Miracoli is truly a place to be seen in person to be believed so why not come and experience a fantastic time here on your next vacation!
