Climb up a scenic hill above the village of San Romano Garfagnana to the beautifully preserved fortress of Vernicole. Fantastic restoration works took place here in 1990 and it’s now open for tourists to browse around.
Or spend a few hours in the village of Perpoli which is still enveloped by two walls, the oldest being a low wall built around the highest part of Perpoli village.

The larger outer wall was built during the Renaissance and has served as a solid back wall for houses built just within its perimeter in typical Italian fashion.
The walled hamlet of Cascio lies just south of Monteperpoli on a vine covered hill overlooking the River Serchio.

A very ancient fortress complex close to San Romano di Garfagnana would be an excellent tour for visitors to explore or perhaps a walk around the fortressed town of Castiglione near Castelnuovo Garfagnana would be nice later in the afternoon.
