Many excavations have taken place here throughout the 20th century to uncover the Roman buildings left in ruins here. A clever street plan had been constructed here. There was a fair sized forum which would have been Cosa town square. Trading of food and goods would have taken place here between the townsfolk.

Cosa never fully thrived under Roman rule, mainly due to its awkward location and many had left the town according to records by 80 BC. A shattering earthquake around 50BC ensured Cosa was to become a ghost town for many years.

During the middle ages, Cosa was re-inhabited on a small scale and slowly grew over the years. Some evidence remains of newer building here such as the ruins of a small castle and a huge cistern which seemed to have been adapted as a small prison!
