Walking along the Piazza della Signoria beside Palazzo Vecchio in the historic centre of Florence may appear to be a perfectly beautiful place full of charm and welcome. But this was once the sight of mass murder over the centuries!

One such victim of a brutal death here was a mercenary captain called Baldaccio d’Anghiari. He was brutally murdered here in 1441. But a strange story that followed over 500 years later may have you thinking twice about who’s watching you in Florence!
The Palazzo Vecchio
In 2001, a young couple walking along Piazza Michelangelo which overlooks Florence, stopped to take a photo of the lit up cityscape. But when they developed the photo, they noticed something strange; an eerie ghostly face staring back at them in the bottom right hand corner!

It was sent to experts who verified that the photo wasn't’t tampered with and many speculate that it may have been the face of the tormented ghost of Baldaccio!

Another mark of bloody history on this spot took place after the epic failure of the Pazzi Conspiracy. The Pazzi family were enemies of the Medici family, a rich banking empire that ruled over many parts of Tuscany in the Middle Ages.

Conspirators were captured and many were hung or burned at the stake at Palazzo Vecchio as a warning not to mess with the rich and powerful. Many have reported odd occurrences and feelings as they pass through this area, especially at night so be on the lookout!
Stone head
Look out for the mysterious carving of a human face on an outside block of Palazzo Vecchio which legend says was the absent-minded ‘doodle’ of the famous Michelangelo! Also worth a look is an odd stone head protruding from high up on the north facing wall of the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore.

It’s said to be the head of a woman who was turned to stone by an angry sorcerer for speaking out of turn as she watched him being marched to his death for previous acts of witchcraft! Have fun learning about other intriguing legends of Tuscany in our related articles
