There are many reasons to be interested in the quarries and landscape at Carrara. Firstly, and perhaps most obviously, it is visually stunning – rugged and romantic. Then, of course, the marble produced there is still considered the best in the world and was a favourite of that genius, Michelangelo, for his sculptures. One of the less well-known attractions to this distinctive and beautiful corner of the world, is movies. Many have been filmed in the area including Carlo Verdone's comedy “Al lupo, al lupo”, “The Agony and the Ecstasy” with Charlton Heston as Michelangelo and Fabrizio Cattini's critically acclaimed “Maternity Blues- Il bene dal male” in the nearby town of Marina di Massa.

However, one of the most famous films to be made in the area in recent years has to be Marc Foster's 2008 instalment of the 007 Franchise, “Quantum of Solace”. In fact, this has become such an attraction to the area that there are specific tours dedicated to tracing the steps (and tracks) of the film.

In between detail shots of the cars and clips of people shooting guns, we catch glimpses of the stunning landscape, of the rich greens of the hills, blues of the waters, craggy cliffs, stone walls, snowy peaks and dusty quarries. The main location was the Fantiscritti quarry and it took two weeks to set up and film the scenes. Speeds of up to 140kmph were reached during the chase scene and, sadly, one Aston Martin was completely and utterly totalled.
