Archaeology And Food In Tuscany This Summer

Medieval dining
2015 is the Year of Archaeology in Tuscany and, due to this there are many events taking place which celebrate the history of the region. Each summer in Tuscany, there are countless food festivals, one in almost every town and something on somewhere in the region each weekend.

This traditional passion for food and the commemoration of the rich historical heritage of Tuscany are being combined this summer in a series of special events, tours, shows, exhibits and dinners.
Roman dining
These “Notti dell'archeologia”, or Nights of Archaeology, are taking place from the 27th of June to the 15th of September in museums, parks and a whole host of other archaeological sites all over the region of Tuscany.

The nights are themed so that you can try the dishes and dining habits of particular periods in times gone by from the Romans to the Renaissance. Find a luxury villa in Tuscany and you can try one of these unique and once-in-a-lifetime dining experiences for yourself!
Renaissance dining
Starting with the Romans, for example, on the 25th of July and the 29th of August you can experience an authentic banquet inspired by the traditions of Ancient Rome in Massarosa at the Guglielmo Lera exhibition pavilion.

This location is an archaeological site and the perfect location to really get into the mindset of the Romans! Tickets cost €35 and booking is required.

For more information, you can visit their site or email them at info[at]massaciuccoliromana.it.

If you're after something a little more informative rather than merely a re-enactment, the Etruscan Banquet taking place at Castiglione della Pescaia in the Archaeological Civic Museum might be just the thing for you. From 4pm to 7pm on the 30th of July, there will be an educational workshop which demonstrates how food was prepared according to the traditional methods of the Etruscans and the Romans. For more information, just email museovetulonia[at]libero.it.

If none of those pique your interest, then there's one that's sure to intrigue any art and food lovers out there - that is the “At The Table At The Renaissance” exhibit taking place from the 15th of July to the 15th of September in the Museo di Benozzo Gozzoli in Castelfiorentino. Set within surroundings with frescoes by Gozzoli and Castelfiorentino ceramics, its the opportunity to not only eat the food of the Renaissance, but also to relive the eating habits and experience the process of setting and eating at a Renaissance table.

For those interested in food or history or the history of food or all three, this is an absolute must and a highly unique opportunity. Don't miss out if you are visiting Tuscany this summer!
