This charming town was founded on a hilltop overlooking the Tuscan coast and is dominated by the magnificent Aghinolfi Castle. Its strategic position allowed a close view of the Tyrrhenian coast that stretched from the Gulf of La Spezia to Livorno.

Unfortunately in 1799, Aghinolfi Castle was subject to a lot of destruction when it was abandoned and locals began removing doors, furniture, windows and anything else of use from it! It was the victim of further ruin when Nazi troops during World War II made it their base and allied bombs were targeted to strike them there.
Its fortune returned in 1997 when extensive plans went underway to restore it. The striking octagonal tower of the Aghinolfi castle was to stand proudly overlooking the lands of Montignoso once again.
Stroll around the busy main square of Montignoso and meander around other buildings of historical and architectural interest such as Villa Schiff Giorgini, the church of San Vito and the Saint Eustache church. The Villa Schiff is now the town hall but originally it was the home of one of the most powerful noble families in the area called the Giorgini.
