Florentine Designers To Visit While In Florence - Part II

Gucci Storefront
Following on from the last post which discussed Florentine fashion designers that you should know about and visit while in Florence, this will continue with two more historic and important designers. As noted previously, many of the city's important designers are still based in Florence and even when they don't have museums like as Salvatore Ferragamo does, they have large boutiques located nearby. With a history that is intrinsically connected to fashion and design, Florence's fashion heritage cannot be overlooked.

Gucci is one of the most recognisable names in Italian fashion and was founded by Guccio Gucci in Florence in 1906. Still based in the city, there is even a Gucci Museum in the Piazza della Signoria just steps from the Uffizi. There are also two stores located in the city and an outlet and Gucci Caffé in the famous The Mall outlet shopping centre, a half-hour drive from Florence. The brand began as a small leather shop, selling leather saddle bags to horsemen. Over time, it became more and more successful. Designs such as Guccio's bamboo handle bag in 1947 and suede moccasins became company trademarks and iconic pieces that are still popular and constantly reinvented by the brand for new seasons and new generations.
Cavalli and models
Patronage from the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Jackie O cemented the brand's reputation and future so that Vanity Fair would go on to describe the label as the “pinnacle of chic”.

Roberto Cavalli was born into an artistic family in Florence and went on to study textile print as a young man. He established his own label in the 70s and became known for his colourful prints and sand-blasted jeans. His clothes are known for being bold, glamorous and flamboyant with use of animal prints and a mixture of fabrics.

The brand has become huge over the decades with a menswear line in addition to womenswear, as well as eyewear, underwear, accessories, perfume, children's clothing and homeware collections which are sold in boutiques all over the world. However, Florence has something that is nowhere else, a Cavalli caffé and store, decorated with his characteristic animal print and stingray-leather walls.

For the serious fashion buff or fan, or even casual admirer, there is nowhere else quite like Florence. Be sure to take in all the fashion on your next visit!
