Bagno Vignoni, Main Square
Bagno Vignoni is a town in the beautiful Val D'Orcia area of Tuscany which will immediately capture your imagination in a way that few other places in the world can. It is characterised by the town square with its pool measuring 49 metres in length and 29 in width, from the bottom of which a number of hot springs known for their therapeutic quality since antiquity bubble up. Bagno Vignoni is one of Tuscany's oldest tourist destination and is a historic spa town which has always attracted visitors to its picturesque setting and hot springs. Find a luxury villa in the Val D'Orcia and spend a day letting your worries float away in this charming little town.

Sadly, it isn't possible to swim in the town square's medieval pool and hasn't been for decades. However, there are alternatives nearby. Bagno Vignoni has other baths in the valley close by in the Parco dei Mulini which are operated by the Township of San Quirico d'Orcia and offer a wide range of therapies, including mud baths, reflexology, Shiatsu and a great many different types of massage.

You can use the baths for free but should expect to pay for any of the other treatments that you might be interested in availing of while there.

The thermal baths of Bagno Vignoni have been enjoyed since Roman times and became even more popular during the Middle Age due to their proximity to Via Francigena, an important thoroughfare connecting Northern Europe to the Italian Peninsula. In 12th and 13th centuries, Bagno Vignoni became a stopover point for Christian pilgrims travelling to Rome.

It has since played host to pilgrims, popes and saints alike and, with such a legacy, doesn't seem to feel the need to sell out to attract visitors. Don't expect souvenirs made overseas or food franchises. Everything in Bagno Vignoni is small, authentic and charming.

You can also visit Piscina Val di Sole which has a laid-back atmosphere and great views towards Castiglione d'Orcia. The pool belongs to Hotel Posta Marcucci, but is accessible with a day-pass which can be bought at the hotel. The Marcucci family have been inhabitants of Bagno Vignoni since the 1700s and offer unparalleled hospitality.

For perhaps the most unique and beautiful spa experience in all of Italy, Bagno Vignoni is the part of Tuscany you need to set your sight on.
