Casciana Terme: A Tuscan Spa Paradise

A massage
Casciana Terme is a town located in the Pisan Hills in Tuscany which is best known for its thermal springs and spas. The town is very much a typical Tuscan one and has all the charms one would expect of the region with a skyline characterised by terra-cotta roofs, undulating green hills and a medieval bell-tower.

Of course, there is a wonderful local cuisine, beautiful old buildings and museums and lots to see and do in the area, as there is in most Tuscan towns but it is the waters and treatments of Casciana Terme that make it stand out from all the rest.

For the ultimate relaxing Tuscan holiday just find a luxury villa in Casciana Terme.
Casciana Terme
The town has over a thousand years worth of history and has managed to preserve its culture and heritage beautifully. The name Casciana derives from the Latin name of Cassius, with the meaning of "Cassio’s Land”. However, the location is first recorded under the name of Acqui at the end of the 9th century. The village then came to be called Bagni di Casciana until this became Casciana Terme in 1956. It is best known for the thermal plant which receives a constant flow of lime-sulfur water at 37°C and is said to have been discovered by the Countess Matilda of Canossa. The story goes that she had an old and sickly blackbird which had turned grey with age. One day, however, she noticed that the blackbird became more spritely and his feathers were returning to their intense black colour and his beak to a bright yellow colour.

The countess followed the blackbird the next day and discovered that the blackbird would land and dip his legs in a strange "steaming water." She decided to try it out for herself and the waters' benefits became quickly apparent. She went on to build several baths, which were the first beginnings of the thermal plants that are located in the area and which, until 1927, were the property of the municipality of Lari. Visitors to the town's spas today can also enjoy the invigorating, slightly fizzy, mineral-filled waters which caress the skin and help de-stress. You can also try other treatments such as facials, saunas, Turkish baths, mud treatments, various massage techniques and Roman baths. The facilities are also now equipped to treat various conditions, such as circulatory problems, rheumatism and respiratory and gynaecological conditions. Fully-trained medical staff and qualified spa staff are always on hand to help and advise guests in the pools, gym and treatment centres.

If you're in need of a seriously relaxing holiday, this little town in Tuscany is just the spot for you; beautiful, quiet, calm, charming and equipped with perfect facilities.
