Take The "La Vita è Bella" Tour Of Arezzo

La Vita è Bella
Roberto Benigni's 1997 Oscar-winning masterpiece, “La Vita è Bella” (“Life is Beautiful”), is an incredibly famous movie that is set during WWII and tells the story of a Jewish Italian man named Guido Orefice, who meets and falls in love with the beautiful Dora and they have a son, Giosue, together.

Their incredibly ideal and happy family life is turned upside when Guido and Giosue are separated from Dora and are taken to a concentration camp. While there, in order to shelter his son from the horrors of his surroundings, Guido weaves an elaborate story that their time in the camp is merely a game. Filmed across several sets, the centrepiece of the beginning of the film, however, is the lovely Tuscan city of Arezzo.

There are several key places to visit to have a “La Vita è Bella” tour of Arezzo, beginning in the historic centre of Arezzo, where you will find the Duomo and Palazzo della Provincia (Communal Palace). Both buildings were background set pieces for a number of scenes and the Piazza del Duomo, itself, is where the scene in which Guido lay out an endless red carpet for his "princess" to walk down the stairs. The Loggia di Vasari, meanwhile, is a Renaissance architectural gem is another key set piece that provided a background for many beautiful scenes and nearby is the Cartolibreria Orefice, which is the real store that served as the book shop that is owned by the protagonist in the film. Other key locations in the film are the Piazza di San Francesco, the historic Caffè dei Costanti and the opera house, which is actually the 19th century Teatro Signorelli in the Piazza Signorelli in Cortona, some 15 miles south of Arezzo.

If you love this film, visiting Arezzo truly is a must and staying and existing in this beautiful city is an even more magical experience.
