If you are looking for a decidedly family-friendly version of Carnevale both Vicchio and Borgo San Lorenzo are great options with lots of events, fun, and games for the little ones among your party. Events start during the day and wrap up in the early evening, allowing you to get everyone home to bed and tucked in.

6. Follonica

Follonica's Carnevale was born in 1910 and has been majorly transformed over the years to create the impressive event and fun atmosphere that exists today with a colourful display as all 8 districts of Follonica compete with paper machè masks and allegorical floats.

7. Piombino

Piombino's event, meanwhile centres around the character “il Cicciolo” (known as the King of Wine) who is a jolly fellow who acts drunk on his float as he his way down the streets of Piombino before being burned at the stake on Martedì Grasso in Piazza Bovio. It's a bit of an intense plot-twist among the pageantry and might be less kid-friendly, depending on the temperament.

8. Chianciano

Chianciano is a unique festival with a concept of promoting awareness about recycling and handcrafting, encouraging participants to make their masks for the festival that reuse old materials – the perfect iteration of Carnevale for the eco-friendly and conscious among you!

9. Lucca

In Lucca, the Roman celebration of Baccanale is reborn and there are sumptuous Medieval-style performances, shows, markets and historical re-enactments; this one is very much for those who enjoy the odd bout of gluttony and excess.

10. Castiglion Fibocchi

Castiglion Fibocchi's event sees the whole town get a makeover and a parade of hundreds completely take over the streets with their fantastical costumes and masks. It will feel as though you have stepped into an entirely different world.
