The Puccini Festival is an annual summer opera festival that is held in the town of Torre del Lago in July and August. Celebrating, commemorating and presenting the work of the famous Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, the festival showcases four or five performances of up to four operatic productions each season. Attracting around forty thousand spectators to the town's open-air theatre, it is one of the most popular opera festivals in the country and is the ideal place to experience opera in Tuscany. If you have found a vacation rental on the Tuscan Coast, or a vacation rental in Viareggio (which is located just 4km away from Torre del Lago), make sure to check it out!
Started in 1930, the origins of the festival are often traced to an apocryphal tale in which, in 1924, Puccini commented to his friend, Giovacchino Forzano that he "would like to come here and listen to one of [his] operas in the open air." Forzano and Pietro Mascagni did as he asked and produced the first performances of a Puccini opera on the lake shore, in front of his former home. Today, the performances take place in the Teatro dei Quattromila, located close to the Villa Puccini.

The festival has developed and grown over the years and this year's festival will be the 64th edition and take place from the 6th of July to the 25th of August. Some of the performances include Andrea Bocelli singing Puccini on the 6th of July; Turandot on July 14th, 21st, and 28th and August 17th; Tosca on July 15th and August 4th and 12th; and more. Two highlights are Carmen by Georges Bizet on August 23rd and Giuseppe Verdi’s Il Trovatore on August 24th.
