Chianciano Terme can trace its origins to the 5th century BC, when the Etruscans arrived and built a temple that was dedicated to the god of Good Health, close to the Silene springs. Those springs and the waters of Chianciano have been a tourist destination and an attraction for their medicinal properties since Roman times and Horace himself is known to have bathed in and imbibed the waters.
Chianciano continued to both draw visitors and function as a regular town over the centuries but, in the 20th century, the springs specifically attracted the attention of developers and neoclassical buildings and facilities were built in the 20s and 30s. In the 40s, the then Fascist-controlled state took possession and destroyed and replaced these, drawing up a new plan under architects Loreti and Marchi. This plan was adjusted by the Town Technical Office of Chianciano in 1958 and eventually passed in 1961 and, today, there is the Old Town and New Town where the thermal spring spas were designed.

This new town and its spas is considered among the finest health resorts in Italy and is one of the most famous thermal bath cities in Europe. Nestled between the Val d’Orcia and the Valdichiana, it is surrounded in lush greenery, which extends to the parks across town. It is most famous for its therapeutic water that is especially recommended for cleansing the liver.
The notable springs and spas in town are Acqua Santa, Acqua Fucoli, Acqua Sillene, Acqua Santissima, and Acqua Sant'Elena. Acqua Santa is located in a forest and has water that surfaces at a temperature of 33°C, which is drunk in the morning on an empty stomach to treat liver and bile system pathologies, such as dyspepsia of gastrointestinal or biliary origin, biliary calculosis, and after surgery to the bile ducts, as well as in case of prolonged drug therapies. Acqua Santissima is used by those looking to treat respiratory problems caused by pollution and other environmental factors. The cold mineral water of Acqua Fucoli complements Acqua Santa, and is drunk in the afternoon to treat gastrointestinal and biliary conditions. Acqua Sillene has a temperature of 38.5°C and is used for carbogaseous balneotherapy as well as for the preparation of thermal muds. Here you can take a toning bath or a therapeutic mud bath to boost blood circulation. Finally, the spring of Sant'Elena is water diuretic and is suited in case of kidney stones, metabolic disorders and urinary system problems.
In addition, there are plenty of place to go for more cosmetic or relaxing spa treatments around town and, if you really need to relax, unwind and recover, it is the perfect destination in Tuscany. Just find a holiday villa in Chianciano Terme and come and enjoy some peace and quiet on an ideally relaxing vacation in Tuscany.
