What is a ZTL?
Streets known as ZTLs (Zona a Traffico Limitato, or Limited Traffic Zones), are specific areas within cities, typically the historic centres, where driving without special permits is prohibited.
Why should you be careful?
These zones are often poorly marked and unmanned, making it easy to overlook the signs and unintentionally enter.
What can happen if you do?
Well, there won't be anyone to physically stop you from driving into these areas so it may seem like nothing happened at all. However, if you do, you'll probably receive an unpleasant surprise in the form of a fine delivered to your home after your vacation. Rental companies will forward them to your address once they receive them so you won’t be able to avoid it if you ever want to be allowed enter Italy again.
So, how can I prevent this from happening?
To avoid the stress and inconvenience altogether, it's best to park your vehicle in the designated parking lots located outside these restricted areas and utilise shuttle bus services (if available) or public transportation to reach the city centre. If driving is necessary, it's crucial to thoroughly research the city in advance. Many fellow travellers have encountered this issue before, so there are numerous forums and information sources available to assist you!
