Volterra, a famous Etruscan city with its impressive walls and museum, offers a journey through ancient history. San Gimignano stands on a hill and is characteristic for its beautiful towers and the Vernaccia, a famous Tuscan white wine that was the first among Italian wines to receive the DOC mark in 1966. Certaldo Alta, where the Italian writer and poet Giovanni Boccaccio lived, is a typical example of a perfectly preserved medieval village. San Miniato is famous for its prized white truffle and was a historic destination of Napoleon Buonaparte during his Italian campaign. For sports lovers, several alternatives are available in the area including a 27-hole golf course in the nearby town of Castelfalfi at 19 kilometers, a riding school in Certaldo at 16 kilometers, and a tennis club in San Miniato at 20 kilometers.
