Visit Monteroni D'Arbia For The Day!

Near the unusual geological formation of Crete Senesi in Siena is the quaint little town of Monteroni d’Arbia. Only thirteen kilometres south-east of Siena, this town took its name from a tributary river of the River Ombrone called the Arbia torrent.

This would be an excellent stop off on a tour of the towns in the Crete Senesi area such as Asciano and San Giovanni d’Asso.

While you’re here, take a look at the ancient Pieve of St. John the Baptist, dating as far back as 1031. It’s a classic example of Roman architecture and houses some elaborate artworks inside such as several canvases by Alessandro Casolari.

How to describe this remote restaurant in the Tuscan countryside, Murlo is one of the many hamlets that you can find off from the ancient Cassia road that leads from Siena to Rome …? SURREAL? This is probably the appropriate term to describe this place.

Perhaps because you’ll see and hear colors, sounds and smells that you thought no longer existed, immersed in a place unchanged by time and make you feel so far away from your world, but more than ever with our feet on the ground; or maybe because the place has always been managed by the legendary Brunello, with his beautiful Nigerian wife Stella.

It’s a mix between a bar, a typical Tuscan inn and a country house, where you’ll probably have lunch in the veranda among the spices planted in the garden and washed table cloths spread out in the sun to dry which Stella will collect while singing songs from her homeland ; or maybe because here you can still savor the delicious traditional homemade food served in large bowls and without too many choices (you eat what they cook for you), among which dominates the wild boar: in the ragù, roasted and in sauce – hunted and cooked by the man Brunello himself.

This is the philosophy that I’ve seen here: the concepts of “kindness, service, family atmosphere” are not contemplated, Brunello and Stella come as they are, as God made them. The place is, as mentioned, very special and not everyone will like it but if you’re in the area and want to feel the “Tuscan soul” you shouldn’t miss this experience.

The cosy town of Murlo in Tuscany is conveniently situated less than twenty kilometres south of Siena and would make for an excellent day trip! Close to the tourist towns of Montalcino and Buonconvento, Murlo is a tiny Orange Flag town, tucked into a forested countryside.

Donosdeo Malavolti was a well known bishop in the dioceses of Siena in the 14th century. His religious territory included Crevole castle that was often the scene of many battles between Florence and Siena. His interests leaned more towards fighting on the battlefields to defend his people rather than acting as their religious preacher. He was highly respected and many loyally followed his military plans. He ordered for the castle’s defences to be strengthened and used all his power in the church to build his forces against Florence. Anyone who disputed his tactics were threatened and silenced very quickly.

accommodatie zeer goed, wij hadden de locatie dichts bij het zwembad.
2 minpuntjes keuken valt nogal klein uit en geen airco wat we wel konden gebruiken bij een temperatuur van 35 tot 39 graden

Wunderschöne, sehr gepflegte Anlage mit unvergleichbarem Ausblick in der Mitte der grete senesi. Wir haben als Großfamilie die ganze Anlage gebucht. Der Vermieter ist sehr nett und zuvorkommend. Das Pool ist sehr schön und gepflegt. Für unsere Bedürfnisse war die Anlage perfekt.

Wir hatten alle Wohnungen gemietet und dazu die Gemeinschaftsräume. Die beiden Häuser sind in einem Topzustand, alles (Räume, Betten, Geschirr usw.) ist sehr sauber. Der Garten mit den vielen Rosen ist ein Traum, der Pool absolut einmalig. Alles wird jeden Tag liebevoll gepflegt. Der Besitzer ist jeden Tag vor Ort und unterstützt sehr gerne. Es war rundum ein wunderschöner Aufenthalt, sehr sehr gerne wieder.

The garden with the many roses is a dream, the pool absolutely unique. Everything is lovingly cared for every day. The owner is on site every day and very happy to assist. Its a wonderful apartment, furnitured with great taste, in a wonderful landscape at the beginning of the Crete, close to Siena. Perfect for anyone who looks for a exceptionally calm, harmonic place to come home to after a wonderful day admiring art and life style in the Toscana. The owners are very nice and always reachable. The appartments are very well kept, everything functions perfectly, everything one needs is there, also things not that usual for Italy e.g. towels, bedsheets, kitchen equipment and so on. We spent a fantastic week there and already think about coming back one day...!

What an amazing place! Had the most wonderful week at this property that led to the best holiday ever. The location is to die for - at the end of an unmade road with rolling fields all around and distant views to Siena from everywhere. Accommodation was spotless and contained everything we could need. Plenty of room for a family of 5 and 18 year old slept on pull out bed with no issues. Cannot recommend highly enough.

We had a wonderful stay at San Donnino. One of the best parts about it was the owner. He speaks excellent English and is very happy to provide information about life in Tuscany. Often when travelling you can feel that you don't understand what makes a place "tick" but being able to talk to the owner over a glass of wine gave us a great insight into this area of Italy.

The property itself was very clean and spacious and the grounds and pool lovely and well cared for. The location is close to Siena and does require you to hop in the car anytime you want to go out.

The property's house wine was great and very inexpensive.

The only negative was that the apartment was supposed to have wifi but in reality, the only way you could get wifi was to either sit in the toilet which was the closest place to the router or to sit in the little alcove outside of where the main computer is situated. Given that my husband had to work whilst we were away, this was a bit of an inconvenience.

San Doninno is echt een paradijsje. Prachtige locatie, zonsop- en ondergang. 360 graden uitzicht (vanuit het zwembad 180 graden) met uitzicht op Sienna. Doordat het op een heuvel ligt, waait het er altijd een beetje, waardoor het nooit te warm is.De prachtig gerenoveerd boerderij ligt aan het einde van een kiezelweg en het is er daardoor heerlijk rustig. Ook al was het vol (+/- 22 gasten) het voelde niet druk. Het appartement is echt prima. Je kunt gebruik maken van de wasmachine en fietsen. Het enige wat er misschien ontbreekt is een ventilator in de slaapkamer, maar je went aan de warmte. De eigenaren zijn geweldig. Ze zijn 'onzichtbaar' aanwezig en altijd vriendelijk en behulpzaam. Toen wij er waren hebben ze een avond met alle gasten georganiseerd, waarbij we wijn en eten kregen zonder dat ze daar iets voor terug vroegen. We hebben hun heerlijke wijn en olijfolie flink ingeslagen! Al met al echt een toppertje.

[English translation courtesy of Easy Reserve] San Doninno is truly a paradise. Beautiful location, sunrise and sunset. 360 degree view (180 degrees from the pool) overlooking Siena. Because it is situated on a hill, there is always a little bit of wind so it never gets too hot. The beautifully renovated farmhouse is situated at the end of a gravel road and it's so quiet. Even though it was full (+ / - 22 guests) it did not feel crowdy. The apartment is really excellent. You can use the washing machine and bicycles. The only thing missing is maybe a fan in the bedroom, but you get used to the heat. The owners are great. They are invisible but present and always friendly and helpful. When we were there they organized an evening with all theguests, where we got food and wine without being asked for anything in return. We have bought their wonderful wine and olive oil ! All in all a real top location.

Every year we spend a week in Tuscany, but this year our stay there was the most pleasant. Our family of 5 adults loved everything about San Donnino! The owner was truly interested in our comfort and satisfaction. The property was located in one of the prettiest parts of Tuscany, and Siena was only a 20 minute ride away. The pool area was beautiful, and there were several good osteria nearby.
