Near the unusual geological formation of Crete Senesi in Siena is the quaint little town of Monteroni d’Arbia. Only thirteen kilometres south-east of Siena, this town took its name from a tributary river of the River Ombrone called the Arbia torrent.

A medieval fortified mill dating from the 14th century still stands here, part of the nearby Cuna farm which once belonged to the Santa Maria della Scala hospital of Siena. It was used as a supplier of grains which was ground into food to serve the patients and poor which sought help from the hospital.

You’ll see in the hills surrounding Monteroni d’Arbia that the breeding of the famous Chianina cattle breed is growing strong here. Agriculture is one of the main economies of Monteroni d’Arbia so visitors can be sure of a delicious range of dishes made with the finest ingredients here.
