Basilica of Sant’ Agata
Go on a lovely day trip to the charming little town of Asciano situated within the Crete Senesi area of Tuscany. It’s located beside the River Ombrone, only thirty kilometres from Siena city.

Stay in a peaceful luxury villa in Siena where you can relax and unwind after a few days of exploring many of the treasures this province has to offer!

Asciano dates back to Etruscan times when settlements first took place here and archaeologists have discovered remains of subsequent civilisations that dwelled in Asciano. A 5th century Etruscan tomb was uncovered here as was the ruins of a Roman style mosaic pavement and baths.
Piazza in Asciano
Due to Asciano being situated between Florence and Siena, during medieval times it was the site of numerous territorial battles.

The famous Battle of Montaperti was fought near Asciano in 1260. Eventually Siena gained ownership of Asciano and reinforced the town with walls in 1351.

While you’re here be sure to visit the stunning basilica of Sant’ Agata which was constructed with travertine stone.
Asciano town buildings
The interior is equally lavish with a decorative roof and walls adorned with frescoes and paintings. Visit the museum of Sacred art in Asciano where 14th and 15th century pieces are on display.

Close to Asciano town is the infamous Monte Oliveto Maggiore monastery which was built with red brick and beautifully contrasts with the grey soils of this Sienese area.

Explore other towns surrounding the Crete Senesi such as Monteroni d’Arbia, San Giovanni d’Asso and Buonconvento along your travels of Tuscany!
