The food here is hearty and packed full of delicious flavours. Visitors can stop off in towns and villages in the area and enjoy a meal of rustic bean soup, local cheeses, salty salamis and salt-less bread. Try a delicious sweet called ‘il Brigidino di Lamporecchio’ which are crispy yellow wafers made using sugar, flour, eggs and essence of anise. They are often enjoyed with sweet ricotta or on their own with a steaming cup of strong Italian coffee.
The town of Larciano in the Montalbano hills is a prime example of a place where food products are created with great passion and made using ancient recipes passed down through the generations.
It’s particularly famous for its pork production, especially spiced sausages and salty salamis. There’s also a cheese factory here called ‘Bufalcioffi’ where cheeses like mozzarella, ricotta, scamorza and other milk products are produced and packaged.
This is the ideal town to come and buy ingredients for a glorious picnic along with some crusty bread, tomatoes and olives. There’s a fantastic wine and vine museum in the town of Carmignano as well that’s certainly worth a visit on your gastronomic tour of the Montalbano hills.
