There's a wealth of superb villas and holiday rentals in Grosseto Maremma and Florence in Tuscany to choose from where the following delicacies originate. A visit to these areas would be the ideal opportunity to explore the history and culture of the people and towns which preserved this traditional produce with such passion!
A bowl of fresh mullet roe
Try some Bottarga do Orbetello that has its origins in the charming town of Orbetello that’s situated in the middle of a lagoon in Grosseto province. It is salted fish roe that comes from the female grey mullet.

It was probably first introduced by the Spaniards when they were in control of this area as they innovated many delicious marine recipes here like smoked eels and picked fish. The roe are tender to eat and have a vibrant amber colour. They are delicious drizzled with olive oil and served with lemon slices, a perfect summer lunch!

If you’re passing through the picturesque province of Florence during your holiday to Tuscany you will probably have the chance to taste two varieties of delicious onions that grow here.

One is called the purple Certaldo onion which has a tender flesh that is sweet to eat and goes wonderfully with a summer salad. A cousin of this is the Vernina onion which is bright red and has a milder, more fragrant flavour. Both are delicious in soups, stews and are often used in a rustic beef stew here called ‘Francesina’
Fruit filled pastry rolls
The towns of Pitigliano and Sorano in the Grosetto province of Tuscany have a tasty treat of their own for you to sample! It’s called Sfratto del Goym, which is a biscuit shaped like a cigar that has a thin layer of baked pastry encasing chopped walnuts, orange peel, honey and nutmeg. This is a wonderfully preserved example of a perfect union of Jewish and Italian cuisine coming together in one delicious biscuit!
