Cassero's tower
Tourists can enjoy a visit to the archaeology museum at the Palazzo Pretorio in the old town centre where they can learn about the intriguing history of Castiglion Fiorentino. They’ll learn that after the Romans conquered the area from the Etruscans, they completely refurbished the layout and structure of the town, its walls and surrounding farmlands. Because of its proximity to major cities, it was constantly under siege and had its name changed several times by whoever was in control of it. Finally in the 16th century, a peace treaty was signed and the town settled under the name of Castiglion Fiorentino.

Tourists should visit Piazzale del Cassero nearby where there was an excavation of an Etruscan temple dating from the 6th century BC. They can see the large blocks of stone used to build the alter podium, the steps leading up to it cut into the stone and some other fascinating artefacts.
Collegiata of Castiglion ollegiata of Castiglion Fiorentino
Visitors will enjoy a trip to the Church of Sant ‘Angelo where they can see ancient discoveries including a cover of an Etruscan cinerary urn with inscriptions on it. Tourists can admire the glorious view of the Val di Chiana area from the museum loggia beside the church. This museum houses some of the finest paintings in Tuscany including ‘Madonna col Bambino’ by Taddeo Gaddi, and the spectacular painting of ‘San Michele Archangelo e le Stigmate di San Francesco’ by Bartolomeo della Gatta. Also here is some ornate jewellery, a gold French cross and a reliquary bust of Sant ‘Orsola dating from the 13th century. Tourists would also enjoy a trip to the Church of Consolazione dating from Renaissance times which has an unusual octagonal shape!

The Castiglionese summer is a visitor’s dream! Some of the celebration dates include the ‘Banchetto Medievale’ on the Saturday before the fourth Sunday of May. In the cloister of the church of San Francesco, the entire town makes an effort to dress, feast and act the way their ancestors did in medieval times. Visitors are sure to enjoy getting involved in the festivities of an exciting Roman style horse racing event on the third Sunday in June which is held in Piazza Garibaldi outside the town walls, a pizza festival on the first weekend in July, a chestnut festival and Palio dei Carretti on the third Sunday in October and a feast of ‘Oliomangiando’ on the last weekend of November.
