Pomarance, A Beautiful Town Situated In The Valley Of Hell!

View of the Town of Pomarance
Despite the scenic town of Pomarance being situated in a place called the ‘Valley of Hell’, it is actually one of the most beautiful places in all of Tuscany! Valle del Diavolo was given its name due to the geothermal activity that goes on here; geysers and boric acid vents emit thick steam and gases into the air because of volcanic activity going on beneath the tectonic plate here.

As proof of Pomarance’s beauty and tourist attractiveness, it has been awarded the impressive Orange Flag award for staying true to its medieval architecture and having a fantastic tourist information office with great advice on what to do and see here.

There is a wealth of excellent holiday rentals in the Pomarance area for those wishing to stay for a few days and embark on an exploration of this unusual place.
Rocca Sillana
Why not begin the day with an interesting tour of the Romanesque church of San Giovanni Battista which houses splendid works such as ‘Madonna of the Rosary’ by local artists, Niccolò Circignani and a beautiful painting of ‘The Annunciation’ by Cristoforo Roncalli. Then take the short walk to a nearby fortress that stands a majestic 530 metres tall over the province of Siena! Called La Rocca Sillana, this magnificent tourist attraction, dating from the 12th century, was at the centre of many battles in Siena. Fortunately it has been restored to its former glory with some much needed restorations and is open all year around for tourists to admire it.
Soffione in Larderello
For lunch, take a seat in Piazza San Dalmazio outside one of the delicious restaurants and order a rustic Tuscan dish like ‘Tortelloni alla ricotta’, a mouth-watering cheesy pasta dish packed full of flavour. Wash it down handsomely with a glass of one of the finest local wines to set you up for an afternoon of further exciting discovery in Pomarance!

Visit the nearby hamlet of Larderello, named after Francois-Jacque de Larderel who first began the mass production of boric acid here in 1818. A museum here will tell tourists all they need to know about the curious geothermal activity that occurs here and how, even back in Roman times its energy was harvested. It’s open all year around except on Sundays and public holidays and admission is free.

Back in Pomarance is a beautiful palace on Via Roncalli called Casa Bicocchi worth visiting. Its interior and furnishing have stayed true to the Burgeoisie social class luxury of the 19th century. It’s open to visitors from May 1st to September 15th on Sundays and Thursdays from 3.30pm to 6.30pm and entrance is free. It’s a wonderful chance to glimpse at what the lavish lifestyle of this social class would have been like.

Tourists are sure to love the attractions of Pomarance and the surrounding area; it’s a little piece of heaven in a hellish place!
