A Legendary Tragedy At Vincigliata Castle!

Tower of the Castle of Vincigliata
If you’re in the mood for learning about one of the most intriguing legends in Tuscany, you would love a visit to the Vincigliata castle near the town of Fiesole in the Florence province where you will learn of a tragic story of two lovers that may have been the inspiration for Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’! There are plenty of exquisite farmhouse rentals available in the Fiesole area where you can stay for as long as you wish in picturesque surroundings.

The legend dates back to the 13th century and tells the story of Uberto and Bianca, two young lovers torn apart by political feuds and bitter jealously. Both were from two powerful Florentine noble families who had been fierce enemies for a long time. They met and fell in love almost instantly but were forced to keep their love a secret. But Bianca’s father, Giovanni, found out about their courtship and forbade his daughter from leaving the castle to meet Uberto.

Then Giovanni was called to war and had a close encounter with death, but was saved and nursed by none other than Uberto! He saw the courage and graciousness of his daughter’s lover and in return gave him permission to marry her.

The big day finally arrived and great excitement was in the air around Vincigliata castle! But as Uberto rode up to the castle for the ceremony, he was brutally attacked and murdered by some evil members of Bianca’s family who were outraged by this sudden union between two families who once hated each other bitterly.

Bianca witnessed this entire horrific incident from the tallest tower in the castle, and in her despair to rush to Umberto, she fell several times and hurt herself badly on her way. As she reached her dead lover, she collapsed in painful exhaustion as her heart broke into pieces. Legend has it that poor Bianca died from the pain of her broken heart a short while later.

Today visitors can walk around the castle where this haunting story is said to have taken place and some have even claimed to have seen her ghost wandering around it, still wearing her bloodstained wedding dress.

This would be an excellent addition to any holiday to Tuscany and is just one of several related articles that describe the fascinating myths and legends of Tuscany. This story is also part of a magnificent Italian documentary that describes some of Tuscany’s most famous folklore which can be bought via their website.

You could even plan a spectacular vacation just to visit and explore the areas around these intriguing places!
