
The lovely little town of Firenzuola lies close to the neighbouring towns of Barberino di Mugello, Scarperia and Borgo San Lorenzo and is less than an hour’s drive from Florence city. Firenzuola sits on a well-trodden old road connecting Florence to Bologna which made it quite an influential trading town back in the day.
Its name literally means ‘Little Florence’ due to the busy hive of activity that took place within its boundaries.

Much of Firenzuola was destroyed during WWII but was rebuilt as soon as the war was over. Walk around the two large graveyards here, much of which was filled with victims from both sides. It serves as a harrowing reminder of the devastations of war.

Today much of the buildings of Firenzuola are modern, but many have beautifully incorporated the old with the new by using the blocks of rubble the town was reduced to.

A sight in Firenzuola worth seeing is the reconstructed church of St. John the Baptist, the remains of was once a majestic medieval fortress and a museum detailing the historical landscape of the Appennino which sits within the Abbey of San Pietro a Moscheta.
There’s also an interesting historical Ethnographic museum which will teach tourists all about the culture and traditions of civilisations that lived in and around the area of Firenzuola over the centuries.
