The Lovers' Lighthouse On Giglio Island Off Tuscany

Lovers' Lighthouse, Giglio
Off the coast of Tuscany there exists an especially beautiful island called Isola del Giglio, or Giglio Island. With Etruscan roots, it has, however, a distinctly medieval appearance of a particularly romantic character. Stone structures and stone houses are dotted across the island which is otherwise rather unspoiled by man. Ninety percent of the territory of Isola del Giglio is uninhabited and flora and fauna of great beauty and interest dominate, especially in springtime, when the island becomes a riot of colour, displaying incredible beauty. Additionally, as it is an island, it obviously has particularly wonderful sea views.

The pace of life here is different, slower, more relaxed. Its beautiful beaches are rarely busy and it is exactly the kind of place one might escape to for a holiday made just for two. One particularly picturesque feature of the island is the lighthouse.

Now in disuse, it was originally called Vaccarecce but has come to be referred to merely as the Lovers' Lighthouse.

Located to the north of the island, at the top of a promontory near the town of Giglio Castello, it is perched, overlooking the sea with a pine forest surrounding. This is the only forest in the island, having been reforested with domestic plants decades ago.

The lighthouse is, therefore, entirely sheltered from the rest of the world, with just a small path leading up the slopes to the building. This allows couples to stroll up and take in the view and lends a highly intimate atmosphere. The lighthouse has become particularly famous due to Roman author, Federico Moccia's, 2007 romantic Italian best-selling novel, “Scusa ma ti chiamo amore” (Sorry If I Love You). In the book a couple end up living in a lighthouse on the island. If you're looking for somewhere to relax and forget everything going on in the rest of the world, this is the place to go to. You'll feel at the edge of the universe, alone with your love.

This is something a little less touristy to enjoy in Tuscany without queues or crowds. Why not find a luxury villa in Tuscany and make the trip to this very special building? You could bring a picnic and watch the sun set, surrounded by nature with the ocean breeze ruffling your hair and the sound of the sea lulling you into a state of calm.
