If you’re touring around the small province of Prato on your next Tuscan holiday then be sure to include Vaiano on your day trip itinerary.
Situated around ten kilometres north of Prato and 25 kilometres north-west of Florence, this pretty little commune actually encompasses a quaint collection of villages and hamlets.
Some of them are called Sofignano, Fabio, La Foresta and Parmigno. Vaiano borders the neighbouring communes of Barberino di Mugello and Montemurlo. There is a huge collection of religious buildings across the municipality of Vaiano.

One in particular is called the Santi Vito e Modesto in Sofignano. It dates back to 1024 and has been refurbished many times, but today is a peaceful and simply designed place of worships that would be nice to sit in for a while to cool off.
If you’re a fan of the great outdoors then you’ll certainly enjoy exploring the beauty of two protected areas nearby called Monti Calvana and Monteferrato.
Visit the spectacular House of Bardazzi in Vaiano which dates back to the 1700s and is renowned as being the site where the infamous Italian patriot and fugitive, Giuseppe Garibaldi was hidden for some time!
Other beautiful buildings in Vaiano include the Teatro Gustavo Modena and the Villa Buonamici which is in the frazioni of Sofignano. During the month of February an exciting carnival takes place here where the townsfolk design and build their own floats to parade proudly around Vaiano.

On the last evening the ‘Chariot of the Carnival King’ is set alight to the entertainment of the crowds.
