Continuing on from our introductory article which describes how the beautiful island of Monte Argentario merged with Grosseto province on the mainland of Tuscany, here we’ll describe what to see and do on your visit to this now anchored mass of land.

The two main towns of Monte Argentario are called Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole.

During the summer months, these busy fishing towns became even busier with flocks of tourists coming to explore the scenery and sunbathe on sandy beaches. Porto Ercole is especially well equipped for the holiday crowds.

Many entertaining festivals are hosted here on Monte Argentario throughout the year, most notably is the ‘Flight of the Goat’ which must be seen to be believed!

Embark on the scenic road which meanders along the west and south coast of Monte Argentario which boasts of sandy beaches, quiet coves and stunning views of the Tuscan Archipelago.

Pull on your hiking boots and climb to the highest point on Mount Telegraph which has amazing views of Monte Argentario, the Tuscan coastline and the region’s seven independent islands.

Monte Argentario was the birthplace of the famous artist called Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio who was known simply as Caravaggio. Born in 1571, his portraits were highly praised for their realism and his exquisite and dramatic use of lighting in his work.

Explore the ancient medieval and Renaissance towers and fortresses that were built along the promontory of Monte Argentario and enjoy a few hours strolling around quite little coastal hamlets like Pozzarello.

Book a boat trip to visit islands of the Tuscan archipelago like nearby Giglio or Giannutri and enjoy a splendid seaside vacation on the anchored island of Monte Argentario!
