Best Rock Climbing Spots In Tuscany

Rock Climbing
We here, at Tuscany Villas, are keen to find attractions and activities for you to enjoy in Tuscany that are a little off the beaten track. We want to show you various sides of this beautiful region, often sides tourists never see, and offer you a wide variety of things to see and do. Hit up the must-see spots and iconic attractions, of course, but if you are looking for something a little different as well, we've got you covered. Recently, we discussed surfing (and how surprisingly good it is) in Tuscany but that is not the only excellent outdoor pursuit that the region facilitates perfectly; there are also brilliant rock climbing facilities throughout Tuscany.

The landscape of Tuscany is beautiful and varied, with lots of rolling hills, medieval hill towns and craggy cliffs that offer a wide range of rock climbing, from single pitch sport routes to long multi-pitch routes across a wide range of grades.

For climbing, Spring or Autumn are the best times of year to visit, though some of the crags are at an altitude of over 1,000m, making it possible to climb in these areas in the summer.

1. Elba Island

Elba Island, that natural paradise to which Napoleon was once exiled, is a great place for lots of outdoor pursuits. The beaches and beautiful scenery make it a popular holiday destination where you can surf, dive, swim, hike, cycle and more. There are, however, also 7 separate crags that offer everything from sea cliff climbing to multi-pitch routes, with many mid range climbs on granite rock. The majority of the routes are single pitch sports routes with some bolted multi-pitch routes up to 170m long on the Monte San Bartolomeo crag. With something for everyone, it is a great destination for all levels of climbers and anyone interested in adventures, in general.

2. Il Camaiorese

Il Camaiorese is a series of crags that are located between Viareggio and Lucca. Here you will find some very powerful single pitch sport routes. This range offers climbs for those seriously in the know about the sport and up for a challenge with extremely steep and difficult climbs – not really a destination for beginners but, rather, somewhere that passionate climbers will thoroughly enjoy.

Just find a vacation rental on the Tuscan Coast and head to the range that suits you, your interests and experience best and be sure to read on to the following post in this series for a few more excellent climbing spots in Tuscany.
