Learn All About Tuscan Wines

Wine
The cuisine of the region is reason enough to find a vacation rental in Tuscany and plan a trip. However, in addition to the rich tradition in delicious food, there is also a wonderful wine culture in Tuscany that makes people want to visit. We have previously discussed where you can find the best vineyards to visit and wine shops to frequent, on numerous occasions, but have never really talked about the wines of Tuscany in a general sense. So, here is your guide to the wines of Tuscany, the ones you won't want to miss and where to find them.

1. Brunello di Montalcino

One of the most famous Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is wine produced in the vineyards surrounding the town of Montalcino. Awarded the first Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) designation in 1980, the wine actually dates back as far as the early 14th century.
While popular since then, it had become one of Italy's rarest wine by the end of World War II. Since the 1960s, the number of producers has gone from 11 to around 200 and while the wine is more readily available today, it remains one of Italy's most expensive wines and an air of exclusivity. With a more fleshy texture and aromas and flavors of blackberry, black cherry, black raspberry, chocolate, leather and violets, it is often compared to the Pinot noir wines of Burgundy. It pairs well with food, especially grilled meat and game. Why not find a luxury villa in Montalcino and try it for yourself?

2. Chianti

Chianti wines are produced in the Chianti region of central Tuscany. Arguably the most famous of all Italian wines, it dates back to the 13th century but the modern recipe was created by Baron Bettino Ricasoli in the 19th century and is composed of a recipe of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo and 15% Malvasia bianca grapes. Sometimes called the “Bordeaux of Italy”, Chianti wines have a long and rich history that could not be adequately recounted here. However, if you are interested in learning more, the best way is to find a vacation rental in Chianti and spend some time enjoying the region and her wines. In their youth, Chiantis are characterised by a predominantly floral and cinnamon spicy bouquet, developing aromas of tobacco and leather as they age. They pair well with a vast variety of foods and particularly with Italian cuisines that feature red sauce, beef, lamb and game.

Of course, there are many more wonderful Tuscan wines to enjoy while exploring the region, so be sure to read on to the rest of the series for our other picks.
