Florence is full of famous and lovely works of art, buildings, parks and gardens. There are also many lesser-known beauties and hidden gems, many gardens among them, in particular. The Torrigiani Garden is seventeen acres of spectacular hidden gardens, located right in the heart of Florence.
It is also the largest privately owned garden in Europe situated within city boundaries. If you have found a vacation rental in Florence and are looking to enjoy its incredible atmosphere and manmade and natural charms, while staying away from regular tourist crowds, it is an ideal attraction in which to spend some peaceful hours wandering around.
The garden became renowned in the 16th century for its botanical garden (and remains celebrated for this) but largely reflects 19th century additions and alterations.

In the early nineteenth century, the Marquis Pietro Torrigiani inherited the property and acquired surrounding land, growing the garden into the hidden giant that it is today. He also followed tastes of the time and reimagined it as a romantic park in the English style. Luigi de Cambray Digny was hired as the architect in charge and expertly combined natural elements with carefully planned landscaping. Next, Gaetano Baccani was brought on board to build the Gothic Revival tower that crowns the garden.
In the famous botanical garden, you can find an extraordinary wealth of tree and plant species from all parts of the globe, old and new greenhouses and lemon houses. It is also where gardening and painting courses.
Throughout the garden there are all kinds of trees including ancient cedars, oaks, horse chestnuts, cypress trees, magnolia trees and more, making it a great place to wander aimlessly during sunny holiday days...
