Discover Maremma's Sunflower Fields

Sunflowers
Fields and fields...endless fields of sunflowers, there are few sights quite so lovely, right?

While sunflowers are native to Central America, they became popular in Europe in the 18th century and were planted all over. In Italy, they truly took root and their popularity grew from the ground up so that they are now actually one of the symbols of Tuscany.
Blooming at the beginning of summer, from June, maturing around the middle of July and lasting until the beginning of August, they flood the valleys and fields of various parts of the Val d'Orcia and Maremma, like a golden sea. The Maremma, in particular, is a great place to get those postcard views of sunflower fields so, if you have found a vacation rental in the Maremma area and are visiting the area in the summer, be sure to set aside a little time to seek out and take these perfect views in.

Wildflowers are abundant in Tuscany in April and May but the sunflowers come later, in the warmer, sunnier months. They can be found near the coast, especially in the hamlet of Pian d'Alma and around the town of Castiglione della Pescaia. A rotation crop that change fields every year, they can move around but if you spend time driving around the Maremma, you're sure to find some, as well as plenty of other incredible sights such as local restaurants, pretty villages, and hidden gems. If you are taking a relaxed holiday in the area during the summer, a sunflower hunt is a must!
