Suvereto is a lovely medieval village that can trace its history back over a thousand years and is located in an incredibly scenic position, overlooking the Costa degli Etruschi in Tuscany. Embraced by ancient town walls, made up of charming old buildings, traversed by paved streets, not far from the sea, and surrounded by the most lush and bountiful countryside, it is the most idyllic little spot and the perfect place to well and truly get away from it all.
Located in the province of Livorno, the village is a great spot to spend a day wandering around and taking in the rich history and traditions that have been preserved in town. Just find a vacation rental in Livorno and head over for a taste of an authentic Tuscan experience.
The town is actually one of the stops on the La Strada del Vino, or the Wine Route, and is in a valley that is populated by thick cork, chestnut and oak woods, Mediterranean scrub that grows right down to the sea, grapevines, and centuries-old olive trees.

As a result, this area is rich in agricultural enterprises from oil mills to wineries. Furthermore, sagre, or local food fairs, are commonplace and from July through August; you'll find music and laughter-filled tents of festive gangs of locals making, selling and eating fresh fritto misto, tagliatelle cingiale (wild boar) and local Sangiovese reds that cost as little as €3.50 a bottle.
There will be an event like this on most summer weekends, and you can easily join in with the locals, eat your fill for a steal and then work it all off on the dancefloor afterwards! Don't miss out on the excellent Calice di Stelle (Chalice of the Stars) wine festival in August, in particular.

In addition to this, Suvereto is a lovely town that has avoided becoming empty and lifeless over the years. It is a vibrant and lively place where antique traditions have been kept alive and festivals inspired by history and folklore are held throughout the year. Beautiful historic buildings and works of art are dotted all over town, such as the 15th century church of Madonna Sopra la Porta, famous Renaissance artist Andrea Guardi's Madonna and Child bas-relief on the sixteenth century Fonte degli Angeli, the beautifully preserved Convent of San Francesco and more.
Of course, Suvereto isn't a destination for hectic running around and visiting tourist attractions. It is, instead, a place to wander, take in your surroundings, eat and drink, and simply enjoy life...
