La Fabbrica di San Martino is a beautiful vineyard nestled among the lush rolling hills just north-west of Lucca around 5km from the city centre, in an area called the Colline Lucchesi (Lucca Hills), which is a DOC wine region in Tuscany. At the centre of the estate is an 18th century villa and surrounding it are grounds that stretch over 20 hectares and encompass vineyards, olive groves, a forest, gardens and more. The estate, itself, is a stunning place to explore and spend time but it is also home to a vineyard and winery that produce celebrated wines. Another structure dating to the 1500s once existed on the site but was eventually replaced by the present villa, a stunning manor house built by Count Lorenzo Sardi in 1735, which is considered one of the finest and most important Baroque villas in the province. This property eventually came into the hands of Giovanna Tronci and Giuseppe Ferrua in 1999. Tronci actually grew up on the estate, which had been owned by her family for generations and came back, along with Ferrua, to restore the villa, tend the vines, produce high-quality wine, and host delicious meals.
Using the principles of biodynamic agriculture and avoiding fertilisers and chemicals, these wines are made naturally and this careful process can be tasted in quality of their delicious wines, which can be sampled on guided tours with Giuseppe, who brings visitors through the vineyard and the wine cellar, explaining the processes and history along the way and ends with a toast in the villa.
