Maremma Regional Park: Discover The "Green Lungs" Of Tuscany

Maremma Regional Park
The beautiful Maremma region of Tuscany is a great, somewhat lesser-known holiday destination in the region. It is a coastal area of Italy that boasts a diverse and incredibly picturesque landscape full of natural beauties. For those interested in a variety of beaches, hiking, flora, fauna, and escaping into a new, impossibly lovely destination, a vacation rental in the Maremma or a holiday rental on the Tuscan Coast is a perfect option.

While exploring this region, one should definitely set aside some time for adventures in the Maremma Regional Park, or Regional Park of the Uccellina. Spread across the chain of hills of the Uccellina and parallel to the coast, stretching 25km from Principina a Mare to Talamone, across almost 10,000 hectares, the park boasts romantic ruins of old watchtowers and a Cistercian abbey, sandy beaches, rocky beaches, dramatic cliffs, marshes, pine forests, cultivated fields and pastures, wildflowers, aromatic herbs, berries, deer, foxes, wild boars, over 270 species of birds, and much more besides. There is a wide variety of things to see as you explore the park and a variety of modes in which to so.

There are various different landscapes within the park, which makes it all the more worthwhile to get out and see as much of it as you possibly can. There are the aforementioned coastal areas with their long, free beaches, the lush mountains of the Uccellina that are covered in Mediterranean scrub made up of a variety of fascinating species of flora, as well as the pine forests of Marina di Alberese, and the Trap Marshes and wetlands in which you will find bird species such as wild geese, cranes, snowy plovers, curlews, European rollers, ospreys, falcons, kestrels, buzzards, woodlarks, woodpeckers, and owls in addition to the cows that live in the wild and are tended by the “butteri”, or cowboys, of the Maremma.

Different routes wind through all of this and can be undertaken in different ways including casual strolls, hiking along the trekking and Nordic walking paths, by bike, in a covered wagon or carriage, on horseback, on a donkey, or by canoe. Read on to find out more about these various options and find the right one for you or, if you, wish pick a few different routes and methods and experience everything that the beautiful and fascinating Maremma has to offer during your stay in this part of Tuscany.

In total, there are 16 planned routes on foot, 4 by bike, 4 on horseback, 4 by carriage, 2 by canoe, a few nocturnal itineraries, and some wine tasting tours that have been organised in collaboration with Slow Food to introduce visitors to local organic products.

One of the most in-depth and strenuous options, for those interested in a challenge, is the Grand Crossing of the Park of the Maremma. These guided tours start at 8am, heading out from the Alberese Visitors' Centre, and last around 10 hours with return expected around 6pm. It covers a distance of 20km and takes in much of the park including various bays, cliff walks, visits to some of those old watchtowers, and more. For more serious hikers, these tours take place once a month, every month between September and June, skipping the hottest months of the year. They run if a minimum of ten people have booked and cost 20 euro per person. For more information, contact the Alberese Visitor Centre at 0564 407098 or email them at centrovisite@parco-maremma.it (you can also complete this form to book).

Another option are the various Nordic Walking itineraries led by a certified teacher with easy, medium, and high level difficulty options available. More customisable to your level of fitness, these tours are also available from September to June from 8am to 4.30pm and can be booked by contacting Laura at +39 327 3693504. Other walking routes can be learned about at the Visitor Centre and this is where you can also take advantage of the bus service that has been established to get hikers to the main trailheads, which is useful in cutting out the boring bits and getting right to the fun part – hiking!

If you are more interested in cycling, there are seven different cycling routes in the park to choose from, again of various levels of difficult and various lengths and durations. These routes require a small fee (used to help maintain everything) and aren’t guided but are laid out to be easily followed. Bike rentals in the park are possible but you can also bring your own bike along, if you have it. Zoom along to different beaches, the pine woods, or historic sites on your bike and enjoy the scenery as you go! Canoe excursions are also organised through the visitor centre with three different options, all easy and for beginners, available. These do not run in autumn or winter as the weather cannot be guaranteed but are a fun way and different perspective from which to explore the park in spring and summer! In addition to all of this, there are also eight different horseback itineraries, four nocturnal itineraries (3 on foot and one by canoe), four different carriage itineraries, and the option of tours on donkeys that are better suited to smaller kids.

The park really does it all and has it all. For those looking to explore the wild west of Tuscany, just browse our vacation rentals on the Tuscan Coast and holiday rentals in the Maremma and get started because there is a hell of a lot of fun, adventure, and beauty to experience!
