The Contucci family can trace their origins in the area to the 11th century and the cellars of the winery itself date back to the 13th century. Located in a piazza near the main square of the historic centre of the town of Montepulciano, the Contucci winery is positioned in a historic estate and a palace that was designed by famous Renaissance architect Antonio da Sangallo the Elder. Originally built for the Del Monte family, construction began in 1519 and it then became the home of the ancient and influential Contucci clan in 1642. In the 18th century, it was further heightened by a stunning and grand fresco scheme by Andrea Pozzo that was commissioned for the interior of the palace. Part of the old inner walls of the town, the building is as deeply embedded in the history and heritage of the region as the Contucci family and the estate's wines are.
Cultivation of the grape by the Contucci family dates back to the Renaissance and they had a firmly established reputation as quality wine-makers by 1700. In 1773 they were documented as one of the founding fathers of Vino Nobile and were a major part of making it into a world-famous wine, "a noble wine destined for the table of nobles." By 1800, they had won lots of medals and testimonials and the international acclaim and reputation of the brand and Vino Nobile, in general, had become undeniable. This reputation has only increased over time and both are now representative examples of an Italian wine type and brand.

Today, Almanno Contucci continues the ancient family business and is at the helm of the Contucci winery and, as President of the Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the body responsible for the region’s wines, he is responsible for not only the quality of their wines but for the quality of the lauded Vino Nobile variety as a whole.
