The charming and historic town of Arezzo makes for an idyllic holiday destination to enjoy the unique culture and atmosphere of Tuscany while staying a little off the more well-trod tourist path. If you're looking to enjoy a key location in the region but you're less interested in bigger cities or more world-famous spots, then a villa with pool in Arezzo is just the thing for your next vacation in Tuscany. In this extraordinary gem of a place, visitors will encounter a picturesque Old Town that has remained largely untouched by time and is so cinematically lovely that it was featured in Benigni's beloved and Oscar-winning, “Life is Beautiful”, stunning churches and palaces often stuffed full of incredible works of art (like Piero della Francesca's astounding Renaissance fresco cycle that covers the walls of the Bacci Chapel), little museums that may not hold familiar works but are fascinating all the same (including a wonderful jewellery museum and the rich Diocesan Museum), pretty little shops selling local crafts and delicious regional treats, and more. Then, around the town's boundaries, you will also find a rather stunning part of the Tuscan countryside with some of the region's iconic and impossibly scenic, lush, rolling hills dotted by old farmhouses, majestic and ancient villas once occupied by ruling lords, and endless vineyards producing some of Tuscany's celebrated local wines.
Not only is this gorgeous vision of the Tuscan countryside a veritable feast for the eyes for those on vacation in Arezzo, it is also ripe with opportunities for feasts for the taste buds in those wineries that can be visited nearby. One such example is the lovely Fattoria il Muro. Located just a few miles from the Medieval core of Arezzo, Fattoria Il Muro is a historic estate that has been owned and run as a winery by the Pancaro family for more than two centuries. On the side of Poggio Mendico the villa of the 17th century poet Francesco Redi can be admired, a poet who described the wines of this part of the world lovingly in his work, “Bacchus in Tuscany,” as blood-red, gold-red, sparkling, bright, and spicy – words to make you wish you were immediately enjoying a glass of wine at Fattoria Il Muro on holiday in Tuscany right this second!
The estate boasts 65 hectares of woods, vineyards and olive groves and is a winery and a full working farm producing fruit and vegetables and raising hens and pigs for eggs and salumi, as well. Due to the temperate climate regulated by the nearby Alpe di Poti mountain range, however, this really is ideal land for wine-making in particular, providing the perfect terroir for growing traditional Tuscan grapes Sangiovese, Trebbiano, Malvasia and Vermentino.
Those who have found a villa in Arezzo and are interested in visiting a winery can come and learn all about wine-production, sample the delicious wines made on-site, and enjoy the other tasty products made at the farm as well as Fattoria Il Muro is open to the public. The wine cellar is open for drop-in visitors from Monday to Friday from 5 to 7pm and the wine and olive oil direct sale is open on Saturday from 9am to 1pm. For proper tastings and tours, you will need to make an appointment by emailing them at info@fattoriailmuro.it. Other events can also be arranged at Fattoria Il Muro including wine tasting out in the vineyard as a wine picnic (which sounds like the most idyllic thing to do on holidays ever), tastings with food pairings, lunches, and dinners. These come highly recommended with previous visitors describing them as, “an enchanting experience,” incorporating a, “good educational tour,” with, “friendly staff and if [sic] course wonderful wine.”
So, if you find yourself in this part of Tuscany, be sure to pay a visit to the lovely Fattoria il Muro!
