Siena is a city in Tuscany famed for its mad-dash annual historic horse race in the main square in its core, for beautiful surroundings, and for delicious pastries. Some of the region's most enduringly famous and popular traditional treats were born or popularised in Siena. And, while there are plenty of places to buy tasty baked goods in Siena, from local supermarkets to cafes to traditional bakeries called pasticcerie, there are some must-see spots that food enthusiasts visiting the city would be wise to make note of. If you have found a villa with pool in Siena and you have worked up an appetite wandering around her picturesque medieval streets, then we highly recommend heading to the oldest pasticceria in town, the Pasticceria Nannini.
Pasticceria Nannini has now actually multiplied and there are several locations but the original seed of the business was born in the early years of the 20th century when a sixteen year-old boy named Guido with a vision struck out on his own, first selling odds and ends at local markets. Guido Nannini then worked as a waiter in Carrara, worked in the commercial sector of Genoa, managed a pastry shop and an important restaurant in Milan, and then returned to Siena with all of his hard-earned expertise and knowledge. There, he ran the Pasticceria Mosca on via Trieste and then the legendary Caffè Greco on via di Città. He also happened to meet up with Brazilians passing through who taught him all about brewing coffee, an art form not yet widespread in Italy. In 1909, at just over twenty years of age, Guido opened a tobacconist's shop on via Garibaldi. He eventually bought a steam machine for coffee and started the innovative Ideal Bar and then the Gran Bar-La Conca d'Oro in 1919, where he served food and coffee, making him a culinary pioneer with the skills he had been taught almost by chance by passing visitors.

Guido then opened a location on via Trieste and then a shop serving food, wine, and spirits on via dei Termini. After Guido's completed takeover of the centre of Siena with these key locations, the company continued with the help of his sons Aldo and Danilo. Upon Danilo's suggestion, the production of panforte, ricciarelli and other typical sweets began in 1948 and were soon found to be in great demand. Over the years, the reputation, both local and international, of the brand only grew. There are now multiple locations of the shop including Conca d'Oro, Nannini Toselli, Nannini Massetana, Nannini Posta, Nannini Bakery, and Caffetteria Nannini Camollia, where you can get some of the delicious coffee that Guido and his family helped introduce to a wider audience in Tuscany and typical treats of Siena including ricciarelli, panforte, panpepato, cantucci, and cavallucci, among others. So, if you have found a villa in Siena and are visiting the area and want to enjoy the taste of this gorgeous and historical city, then these shops are some of the best and best-loved spots in which you can try her most traditional and tried and tested baked goods.
