Tuscany is famously home to some of the prettiest towns and villages in the world. However, if you have found yourself a vacation rental on the Tuscan Coast and are spending time in that part of the region, you'll discover some especially charming little gems. Among them all, however, one of the most utterly picturesque has to be Suvereto. A perfect place in which to enjoy a day trip, it is a combination of stunning natural surroundings and a delightfully lovely village plucked from the pages of a storybook or from an image on a postcard. This is truly Tuscany at its most unbelievably idyllic, which is saying something in a part of the world that is famous for being almost too pretty to be real.

Suvereto is a medieval village ringed by its old walls still, nestled among the foothills where the Cornia Valley rolls out below the Colline Metallifere. From the village, one can take in views across the iconic rolling hills of Tuscany, blanketed in cork oak trees (for which the village is named), olive groves, and vineyards, right across to the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Gulf of Follonica, and Elba Island. About a half hour to forty minute drive from the seaside and about 60km southeast of Livorno, this picturesque village is a well-preserved and fascinating spot and an excellent place to explore while on holiday on the Tuscan Coast.
Dating back to before 1000AD, Suvereto seems completely frozen in time and is a charming little tangle of tiny streets, alleys, and staircases that wind up towards the ancient fortress that crowns the village. In this historic centre of the town, one will find that the buildings and houses have been lovingly restored in recent years and are characterised by the exposed rich local stone from which they are built. Flags, windows framed by wooden shutters, window boxes overflowing with plants and blooms, and other delightful details further enhance the picturesque nature of these charming structures.

Then, of course, there are specific architectural gems like the Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall) that dates back to the 13th century and is considered one of the most important examples of medieval civic architecture in the area, the pretty parish Church of San Giusto with its fine decorative portal and rose window, the 19th-century Church of Saint Michael with its rich collection of Religious Art, the remains of the ancient Monastery of St Francis (the cloister of which is now a site for concerts and events), and the impressive ruins of the ancient Rocca Aldobrandesca or Suvereto Castle, which affords a stunning view over the surrounding area. Other specific tourist attractions and events that are worth checking out in town include the Doll Museum that honours a handicraft traditionally practiced in town since the early 19th century, the hiking and cycling trails that surround the incredibly lovely landscape around the village, the Sagra delle Cinghiale (Wild Boar Festival) in December, and the delicious local oil and wines that are produced in the area and can be bought and sampled in local shops and restaurants. Those interested in handcrafted and artisanal goods and products will also discover that the town is still home to some local craftspeople producing some of the items for which Suvereto once was famous, including cork workers, carpenters, and straw workers.
However, while specific sites and attractions are all well and good, Suvereto is very much the type of sleepy and charming gem in which the most enjoyable activity is to just be and to wander aimlessly. Stumble upon unexpected pretty sights, stunning architectural gems, great family-run eateries, magic little stores, and fall in love with the place on your next vacation on the Tuscan Coast.
