1. The Uffizi
We mention this famous gallery in Florence all of the time and for good reason! It is one of the top attractions to see in Tuscany and especially if you book a vacation rental in Florence itself. Named for its previous purpose as offices used by the renowned Medici family, it is an extraordinary historic building and architectural gem. Importantly, however, it is also one of the most remarkable galleries in the world with an incredible collection that abounds in masterpieces. With particular highlights such as the room with Botticelli's two most iconic works – The Birth of Venus and Primavera – as well as pieces by the likes of Giotto, Rogier van der Weyden, Michelangelo, da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, and more, it is certainly unmissable for art-lovers but can be appreciated by anyone visiting the city.
2. The Leaning Tower of Pisa
One of the most iconic architectural wonders and monuments in the world, this certainly is a must-see, even if you're not going for the full cheesy photo-op moment (although we won't judge if you are!). Located in the Piazza del Duomo or Piazza dei Miracoli, the Leaning Tower is right next to the city's beautiful cathedral, baptistery, and the elegant burial grounds of the Camposanto. So, not only can you see this beyond famous sight with your own eyes but you can also visit these architectural wonders at the same time.
Tip: Unless you're really motivated to do it, we don't necessarily recommend paying to go up into the Tower or waiting for ages to get your posed shot. Instead, head to Pisa for the day or book your vacation rental in Pisa and stroll by in addition to simply admiring the tower as it appears between buildings and over the skyline while you explore this charming historic city.
3. Michelangelo's David
Located in another of Florence's great art institutions, the Accademia, Michelangelo's David is not the only wonder or masterpiece on display. We certainly suggest seeing the great Master's idealised man for yourself if you are on holiday in Florence but be sure to also check out the rest of this exceptional museum, which hosts other Michelangelo pieces and works by the likes of Botticelli, Perugino, Bronzino, Giotto, and more.
4. Saturnia's Hot Springs
An image often reproduced of Tuscany is the striking hot spring cascades of Saturnia. Just one of the many towns with naturally-occurring hot springs in Tuscany, this is perhaps the most photogenic example and a large open-air spring that can be visited freely. Of course, you will have to compete with crowds at many times of the year but we think it's worth it to experience the relaxing waters and stunning setting. Certainly, a great reason for spa fans planning a Tuscan getaway to consider one of our villas in Saturnia and the surrounding area.
Tip: If you want a more peaceful hot spring experience with smaller tourist crowds, try to also plan a visit to a less popular example on another day or enjoy a true luxury escape in Tuscany by treating yourself to a day at a spa that also has hot springs.
5. The Val D'Orcia
Much as the great cities and historic towns of Tuscany appeal and present endless attractions, the rolling green hills and bucolic scenes of the countryside are some of the most enduring and appealing images of the region that are frequently presented to tourists. Taking in these landscapes - whether you're staying in a vacation rental in Chianti or another rural area or you are based in a town or city and are planning day-trips to go out and explore - is a major highlight of Tuscany. Certainly, these scenes present some of the most incredible natural attractions in the region and, while there are plenty of beautiful areas in the Tuscan countryside, the Val D'Orcia is famous for many of the most picture-perfect scenes. Come drive around the area in the early morning and take in the magical sight of fog rolling over the hills and valleys or simply head out at any time of the day and take in the winding cypress-lined roads, pretty farmhouses, lush surroundings, and pastoral wonder. Tip: To experience one of the most picturesque and photographed views for yourself, head to the village of Vitaleta, on the road between San Quirico d’Orcia and Pienza. Just outside of town you will see the impossibly pretty little Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta on one of those winding roads with hills all around – a truly idyllic image!
