The castle was once one of the most important strongholds in Italy and now is open for guided tours to help visitors learn more about its glorious past. From its highest points, tourists can see magnificent views of the valley as well as the unusual double walls that surround the fortress. The outer wall is a pentagon shape and the inner wall is of triangular shape. There were once three towers at each corner of the triangle but sadly they are now in ruins.
After this fascinating tour, why not head to the Romanesque church of San Pietro where visitors can admire the many oil paintings, frescoes and terracotta sculptures from Della Robbia’s workshop.
