Visit one of the most scenic places in all of Italy, the rustic town of Sarteano in the south of Tuscany! It’s an ancient town with an intricate network of narrow streets and alleys built at the base of a huge medieval castle dating from 1038. It stands on a plateau of Mount Cetona at over five hundred metres above sea level and is a perfect blend of manmade structures and nature.

This harmonious coexistence and varied range of interesting tourist attractions has earned it the esteemed Orange Flag award. Tourists wishing to stay here for a few days have a great choice of vacation rentals in Sarteano.

A splendid start to the day would be a guided tour around the majestic castle that guards the town of Sarteano. Open between May and September, tourists will be brought in through the building and given a detailed account of its tumultuous past. From its heights, one can see breathtaking views of Val di Chiana, Monte Cetona and the Umbrian mountains on the horizon.

Take a tour around the impressive archaeological museum in the Palazzo Gabrielli, packed full of Etruscan, Bronze Age and Roman artefacts discovered in nearby sites. In the old town centre is the decorative San Martino church. Inside its walls is the fabulous painting of ‘Annuciation’ by Domenico Beccafumi dating from the 16th century.

Why not take a break in the afternoon with a casual lunch in one of two welcoming bars in the town, Bar dello Sport in Piazza Bargagli and Bar Italia in the town centre where you can enjoy a lovely glass of wine or cup of coffee. There is a great selection of authentic Tuscan restaurants in Sarteano which serve one of the area’s specialty dishes; Pici del Cacciatore which is a hand rolled spaghetti served with a rich wild boar sauce.

Why not relax in the afternoon at the public swimming pool of spring water, heated to a lovely twenty four degrees! Then take a history trip out to Pianacce Necropolis just outside town to admire a Quadriga tomb from the 4th century BC which has frescoed walls of Etruscan paintings depicting their beliefs of an afterlife.

If you’re lucky enough to be here on the 15th of August you will witness a colourful festival called ‘Giostra del Saracino’. It’s a jousting tournament in which five contrada of the town compete against each other in a series of tasks to win the grand prize. An exciting parade takes place beforehand and the main event is followed by a night of music, feasting, dancing and fireworks!
