Settlements in this region date back to prehistoric times and there are some lovely museums in the area that display many artefacts that were excavated from digs in the nearby towns of Saturnia, Marsiliana and Poggio Murella. Gavorrano is home to an ancient fortress called Castel di Pietra and its walls run around the perimeter of the town.

Visitors will enjoy a stroll around the little shops and craft stalls located in this friendly part of Tuscany. Why not buy a few of the delicious local cheeses, salamis and breads and perhaps a nice bottle of wine to take with you to a quiet mountain spot to enjoy as you gaze all around at the breathtaking scenery
gavorrano theatre
Visit the natural theatre carved out of rock nearby to the mining park here! Carved under the cave of San Rocco, visitors can be treated to some of the many music and theatre performances held here throughout the year. Also worth attending is the annual Gavorrano festival of “Salto Della Contessa” meaning ‘The Countess Jump’ that originated from the story of a countess called Pia Del Tolomei.

She was the wife of an evil man called Nello Pannocchieschi who murdered her by throwing her out of one of the castle windows. Legend has it that he was in love with another woman and wanted to marry her so he killed Pia to get her out of the way!

This horrific story even earned itself a mention in Dante’s famous poem ‘The Divine Comedy’. The townspeople commemorate this poor woman’s tragic death every year by hosting a medieval tournament between two districts of Gavorrano. There is music dancing and street food served during the celebrations which takes place on the second Sunday of August every year.

This would be a lovely little stop off on your travels through Tuscany. The people of Gavorrano are very welcoming and are sure to make you feel right at home.
