Pienza was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 and later in 2004, the rest of this picturesque valley was included as a protected area. On the site where Pienza now stands, a village called Corsignano once existed.
It was the birthplace of Pope Pius II. When ordained pope, he had it rebuilt into a magnificent Renaissance town. Pienza was a very early example of clever urban planning as visitors will see from its well structured layout.
Be sure to see the beautiful Palazzo Piccolomini that is trapezoidal in shape. It’s made up of four corner buildings connected by grand corridors.
