A road leads from Piazza della Cisterna to the castello of San Gimignano which tourists can easily walk after exploring the stunning Cortesi Palace, the house of Cattani and the Torre del Diavolo which frames the northern side of the piazza.

Piazza della Cisterna was built at the intersection of two main roads around which San Gimignano was built which were the pilgrim route called Via Francigena and the road between Pisa and Siena.
